BQ Otama alternative

2026 for all it's craziness has done one thing really well. Produce top quality fishing baits. With all the noise about urchin baits this year another top producing lure managed to slip through the gaps. This bait is flat out catching fish and a bunch of them. If there had not been an urchin craze this year the BQ Otama would have been the big bait. But just because the urchin stole the show doesn't mean you can't get sneaky and grab one of these for yourself. The alternative to the BQ Otama was designed to be a slow wake bait but can also be used subsurface. At this time the supply is limited but I am trying to have more for the spring season.

To get the most out of the BQ Otama, anglers need to reel in slowly—only setting the hook once they feel the full weight of the fish. If you react too quickly, the lure will slip out of the fish’s mouth. This is not your usual “twitch and strike” lure—it’s something special.

The name BQ Otama carries a deeper meaning:

• “BQ” stands for “Be Quiet”—a reminder to stay calm and reel patiently.
• In Japanese, “BQ” also sounds like “B-grade,” which adds a fun twist, since Hiroshi is known for making only top-tier lures. It’s a playful contradiction that fans of Nishine Lure Works really enjoy.
• “Otama” means tadpole in Japanese—hence the unique shape and swimming action.
